Author, podcaster, and LLVLC team member Hank Garner is our interview guest today in Episode 1313 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

Associate professor of medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center and diet researcher Dr. Christopher Gardner is our guest today in Episode 1311 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

Nephrologist and low-carb obesity medicine practitioner  Dr. Keith Runyan is our guest today in Episode 1308 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

In 1998, Dr. Keith  Runyan developed Type 1 diabetes at the age of 38 which was fairly well controlled with intensive insulin therapy, but he was plagued with frequent hypoglycemic episodes. In 2011, while training for an Ironman distance triathlon, he was looking for a better way to treat his diabetes and perform endurance exercise and he decided to give the low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet a try. In February 2012, Dr. Runyan began the diet for the treatment of his diabetes and learned that this diet was also effective for the treatment of numerous other conditions, including obesity. Dr. Runyan completed an Ironman distance triathlon on October 20, 2012, in a full state of nutritional ketosis and feeling great doing it. Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Runyan share about how powerful a modality for optimizing health shifting from your body over from being a sugar-burner to a fat and ketone burner can be.

When he realized he had diabetes, this St. Petersburg, FL-based nephrologist attempted to follow the American Diabetes Association recommended low-fat diet with a dietary intake of 50-60% carbohydrates. He thought he needed to eat this way along with balancing out his diet with insulin use, but his blood sugar control was still too erratic to be considered a success after two years of eating this way. That’s when Dr. Runyan decided to dibble-dabble with the low-carb strategies suggested by former podcast guest Dr. Richard Bernstein and in 2011 took at serious look at both the Paleo diet and the low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet to bring even better management of his diabetes as well as fueling his newfound passion for participating in triathlons. The results have been phenomenal.
