Scottish general practitioner, medical research skeptic, and author Dr. Malcolm Kendrick is our guest today in Episode 963 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

The current state of nutritional health research is in shambles. With all the medical advice that's being given to patients that seems to go back and forth saying one thing is for you one day and then turning right around and stating that same thing is suddenly bad for you, what is a patient to believe? For a Scottish general practitioner named Dr. Malcolm Kendrick, he's been observing the games that are played with the research and stands up against the way Big Medicine is manipulating the studies towards things that make the most money and not necessarily the actions that will improve the health of patients. Dr. Kendrick has released a new book about this subject entitled Doctoring Data: How to sort out medical advice from medical nonsense. Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Kendrick have a deep discussion about the intricate role of medical research and the medical professionals who promote it on modern health.

Certified Functional Diagnostic Practitioner and graduate of the Kalish Institute Christopher Kelly is our guest today in Episode 961 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

Today we have arguably the most unique episode we've ever done in the history of this podcast. While the vast majority of the interviews conducted on "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show" have featured Jimmy speaking with medical doctors, researchers, nutritional health experts, and more, what you will hear today is something far different than that. Jimmy has been dealing with some inexplicable weight gain over the past couple of years despite having an immaculate low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet. This caught the attention of a big fan of this show and a Certified Functional Diagnostic Practitioner named Christopher Kelly from Nourish Balance Thrive. He offered to conduct a battery of functional health tests on Jimmy and our host thought it would be educational to have you eavesdrop in on the analysis of these numbers to give a taste of what kinds of things a functional medicine practitioner looks for and discusses with their clients. Listen in and follow along as Jimmy and Chris have a fascinating one-hour consultation about his latest health numbers.

Habit-building specialist, popular podcaster, and perennial New York Times bestselling author Gretchen Rubin is our guest today in Episode 960 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

Breaking bad habits and behaviors can seem like an impossible thing to do because the pull to keep doing the same things you are used to doing is so incredibly strong. But for a former clerk for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor-turned-writer named Gretchen Rubin, bringing about change is all about creating new good habits that are much more desirable while making your old bad habits into something you just don't have any desire to do anymore. If you've never heard of Gretchen before, she's a pretty big deal in the publishing world selling over two million copies of her books worldwide in more than thirty languages. Her 2009 classic book The Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun was a runaway New York Times hit and now she's back with her much-anticipated follow-up release (which has already hit the New York Times bestsellers list) called Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives. She's also got an extremely popular self-help iTunes podcast entitled Happier with Gretchen Rubin that's worth checking out. Listen in as Jimmy and Gretchen talk about her support for low-carb living ever since reading Gary Taubes' 2010 book Why We Get Fat and What To Do About It, her "Four Tendencies" quiz, and a whole lot more!

Former Biggest Loser contestant and positive body image advocate Kai Hibbard is our guest today in Episode 959 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

One of the biggest cultural phenomenons over the past decade has been the advent of weight loss reality television shows like The Biggest Loser. The images of morbidly obese contestants running on treadmills and eating healthy are meant to inspire and give hope to a nation of people wanting to lose weight. But for one of the former contestants on the show, what goes on behind-the-scenes of the highly-profitable television show is utterly disgusting. Her name is Kai Hibbard and you might remember her as the runner-up winner in Season 3. But she was so mortified at the way the contestants were treated by the trainers and producers that she decided to speak out against the public fat shaming they not only allowed but encouraged. Listen in as Jimmy and Kai have a stunning chat about the deplorable act of fat shaming that happens in our culture.

Integrative Nutritionist and bulimia sufferer Sara Keough is our guest today in Episode 958 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

Today we have perhaps one of the most unique podcasts we've ever shared with you in a conversation featuring a Baltimore, Maryland-based woman named Sara Keough. She is a recent graduate with her Master's Degree in Integrative Nutrition and, more importantly, she has struggled with food addiction and bulimia for nearly 20 years. Jimmy met Sara on the flight back to the United States from the LCHF conference that took place in Cape Town, South Africa in February. After hearing her harrowing story of struggle with binge eating and purging, Jimmy knew he needed to share this with his listeners today to help others who have become frustrated by the way eating disorders are viewed by mainstream medicine.

Listen in as Jimmy and Sara talk about when she first started purging at the age of 12, her interest and knowledge in nutrition, how she struggled with carbohydrate and sugar addiction, how the ketogenic diet helped her improve her eating disorder for longer than anything else she'd ever tried, her experience going to see doctors at Johns Hopkins to get help for her bulimia, the denial by the doctors there that she had an eating disorder, their reaction to her low-carb, high-fat diet, their decision to offer her Prozac to help with her mood issues (which she denied), why they didn't offer up a specific diet for her to follow and told her to try not to purge, the horrible food choices they recommended she try (pancakes, really?), and her continuing struggle to deal with this condition. At the end of the interview, Jimmy put out a call to anyone who would like to help Sara in her ongoing battle with bulimia. If you can help, then please send an email to livinlowcarbman@charter.net.

Recovering corporate lawyer, software entrepreneur, and bestselling Australian health advocate and author David Gillespie is our guest today in Episode 956 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

We live in an incredibly strange world these days when the food supply has become so bastardized that we have to use a qualifier like "real" to describe what we mean by the word "food." But it's undeniable that the further and further away from real food we have gotten over the past few decades, the more and more obesity and chronic disease has taken hold impacting tens of millions of people worldwide. This is something that has become greatly concerning to a Brisbane, Australia-based consumer health advocate named David Gillespie (listen to Jimmy's previous appearances on the podcast in Episode 761Episode 592, and Episode 219).

David has watched how the food companies have devised a clever plan to replace the most expensive real food ingredients with cheaper, industrialized foods comprised of mainly sugar, vegetable oils, and processed grains and promote them to the public as healthy with the blessing of the major health organizations. He's written a brand new book about this topic entitled Eat Real Food: The Only Solution To Permanent Weight-Loss And Disease Prevention (currently only available in paper form in Australia, but the e-book version is available for download in the United States). Listen in as Jimmy and David have a compelling conversation about how the food supply has become changed so radically and what we can do to turn things around by switching back to real food again for the sake of our weight and health.

Livestock rancher, environmental lawyer, sustainable food advocate, and author Nicolette Niman Hahn is our guest today in Episode 955 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

AUDIO

Beef has been under assault in recent years as a primary culprit in both global warming and health decline. But the only problem with these public perceptions of cattle is that they are dead wrong. For an environmental lawyer turned rancher named Nicolette Hahn Niman, who just happens to be a longtime vegetarian, says none of the arguments made against red meat from an environmental or public health perspective are valid. She's written a new book about it called Defending Beef: The Case for Sustainable Meat Production to make a compelling argument for responding to these charges against meat.

Listen in as Jimmy and Nicolette talk about why people believe cattle are bad for the Earth and their health, how livestock actually contribute to the ecosystem making the land better off, why small-scale farms producing grass-fed meats can and should become the primary basis for the American food supply, how factory farming has caused damage to animal, the environment, and the humans that consume the meats produced by them, why none of the claims about beef on health have been shown to be true, how the popular notion that it takes more water to create a pound of meat is just plain wrong, how the human diet has changed so radically in just the past century, and how real sustainability in the food supply is the wave of the future of human survival.

Board-certified neurologist and perennial #1 New York Times bestselling author Dr. David Perlmutter is our guest today in Episode 954 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

The rise of interest in the relationship between gut health and virtually every other aspect of overall health has been quite stark over the past couple of years. And for a Naples, Florida-based board-certified neurologist and perennial #1 New York Times bestselling author Dr. David Perlmutter (listen to our previous interviews with him in Episode 867Episode 725, and on Ask The Low-Carb Experts Episode 51), the impact of the microbiome on the brain is indelibly connected. You probably know him well for his focus on the dangers of consuming grains on your brain health with his recent runaway hit books Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar--Your Brain's Silent Killers and The Grain Brain Cookbook: More Than 150 Life-Changing Gluten-Free Recipes to Transform Your Health. But now he's back with a brand new book in 2015 zeroing in on this banding together of gut-brain health entitled Brain Maker: The Power of Gut Microbes to Heal and Protect Your Brain–for Life.

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Perlmutter have a fascinating discussion of how the gut bacteria plays a critical role in brain health, the scientific relationship between poor gut health and issues like depression, mood disorders, and other cognitive disorders, why inflammation and bowel permeability develop in someone with poor gut health, the damaging effects that women having a C-section are putting on the future health of their babies, the devastating impact of overusing antibiotics on the human microbiome that leads to obesity, the key markers to look for demonstrating gut permeability, how fecal transplants can be helpful in treating infections as well as replenishing gut flora that's been depleted, how reducing carbohydrates and consuming more probiotic foods is critical to reestablishing gut and brain health, why the foods you choose to consume are the biggest factor in revolutionizing brain health through the gut, the kind of fermented foods you should be eating in your low-carb diet, and so much more! If you're just eating low-carb and thinking that's enough to make every aspect of your health optimal, then you'll want to hear what Dr. David Perlmutter has to say about enhancing your low-carb lifestyle to improve your health, especially in the brain, even more!
