After hearing all the negative comments about low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diets in the Paleo blogosphere lately, our host Jimmy Moore penned a blog post about it last week entitled "7 Lingering Myths Everyone Should Know About Low-Carb Ketogenic Diets." As we heard in Episode 868 yesterday from Paleo blogger, podcaster, and author Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, there are very real concerns being expressed from people in the Paleo community about the use of nutritional ketosis as a means for optimizing health. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on the prevailing dogma in the Paleo community that women need more carbohydrates than men and should avoid ketosis and intermittent fasting. These claims don't seem to be backed up by any research. (At least I'm not finding it.) After listening to a few talks from the Ancestral Health Symposium at Berkeley, I am fed up with the baseless claims and would like to respond on your podcast if you're game.

Today's Keto Clarity expert interview is with a St. Petersburg, FL-based internal medicine, nephrologist, and obesity medicine practitioner named Dr. Keith Runyan. In 1998, Dr. Runyan developed Type 1 diabetes at the age of 38 which was fairly well controlled with intensive insulin therapy, but he was plagued with frequent hypoglycemic episodes. In 2011, while training for an Ironman distance triathlon, he was looking for a better way to treat his diabetes and perform endurance exercise and he decided to give the low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet a try. In February 2012, Dr. Runyan began the diet for the treatment of his diabetes and learned that this diet was also effective for the treatment of numerous other conditions, including obesity. Dr. Runyan completed an Ironman distance triathlon on October 20, 2012 in a full state of nutritional ketosis and feeling great doing it. He released a seminal book about the work he is doing using a calorie-restricted low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet in cancer research on mice entitled Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer. Dr. Seyfried also does research focusing on gene and environment interactions related to complex diseases such as epilepsy, autism, brain cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases.
