Neuroendocrinologist, anti-sugar crusader, and New York Times bestselling author Dr. Robert Lustig is our special guest today in this LLVLC Show Classic from our golden archives in Episode 807 of "The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show."

Today's LLVLC Show Classic episode guest is someone who initially told Jimmy Moore he didn't want to be on the podcast when he was asked. But thanks to Jimmy's fellow health podcaster Sean Croxton from "Underground Wellness" who told University of California San Francisco professor of pediatrics Dr. Robert Lustig that Jimmy's show is open-minded and honest in his interviews, he agreed to be on this podcast. At the time, his infamous viral YouTube video lecture "Sugar: The Bitter Truth" was all the rage. In 2014, that video is still going strong at 6.5+ million views and counting. And the conversations Jimmy had was such a hit that he was back for another interview soon thereafter before the release of his bestselling books Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease and Fat Chance Cookbook: More Than 100 Recipes Ready in Under 30 Minutes to Help You Lose the Sugar and the Weight.

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Lustig discuss why he thinks a total "low-carb" approach misses the boat, why the vagus (or pneumogastric) nerve and insulin metabolism are forcing us to store more fat and be less active, the results of his studies that show fructose is metabolized more like alcohol than glucose, and therefore contributes to liver damage, and a whole lot more. These back-to-back interviews aired long before the world knew who Dr. Robert Lustig was, so enjoy this very special LLVLC Show Classic episode with the man himself.

Registered, Licensed Dietitian, health coach, blogger and podcaster Cassie Bjork is our special guest host interviewing Paleo blogger and author Michelle Tam in Episode 806 of "The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show."

Today we've got a guest host that may be familiar to fans of Jimmy Moore's podcast. She is Cassie Bjork from "Dietitian Cassie" and serves as Jimmy's co-host on his Friday podcast "Low-Carb Conversations With Jimmy Moore & Friends." She is incredibly passionate about exposing people to healthy nutrition with real food. Through her work as Dietitian Cassie, she focuses on debunking rumors, diet myths and fads while teaching clients how to eat healthy by breaking down research-based material into practical forms that can be implemented into any lifestyle. Cassie is an ardent believer in using real food for optimal health and performance and strives to live a balanced lifestyle while helping others do the same.

Cassie invited on Paleo blogger and New York Times bestselling author of Nom Nom Paleo: Food for Humans Michelle Tam from "Nom Nom Paleo." In partnership with her husband, Henry Fong, Michelle developed the top-selling Nom Nom Paleo iPad app as well as their new book. When she's not cooking or writing, Michelle can be found working graveyard shifts as a hospital pharmacist, chasing her two young sons around the house, or passed out cold (yes, she's got quite the quirky sense of humor, but that's why we love her!).

Listen in as Cassie and Michelle discuss how she balances the many important roles in her life, how she prioritizes each of those duties to stay sane through the busyness, what she feeds her kids in their school lunches, how she transitioned her kids to embrace and love the Paleo diet, the importance of being realistic and listening to your body, the critical impact of exercise on health, not falling for “Paleo Perfectionism,” her recommendations for stress management to prevent stress eating, and how the idea of treats fits into a Paleo template. And don't miss hearing Michelle shares her kitchen staples and what she does when she doesn’t have a lot of time to cook. This is a fun episode with two amazingly spectacular leaders in the Paleo/real food community.

TRANSCRIPT:
Hi Everyone, Welcome to another awesome episode of Jimmy Moore’s Livin La Vida Low- Carb. I’m Sarah Stewart, I'm Steve Hayter, and I'm Dr. Brett Hill and we are the co-hosts of That Paleo Show.

We are super pumped to be your guest hosts on today’s show and have put together a special episode with you all specifically in mind. We can’t wait to get stuck in and share with you an amazing strategy that has brought us bucket loads of fun, pushed us to our limits and given us many personal insights. It’s helped to keep us inspired and has also given us the kick in the pants that we all sometimes need when constantly striving to be the healthiest versions of ourselves possible. Today we are talking--30 DAY CHALLENGES!

We know the Livin La Vida Low-Carb tribe are a switched on crew and we wanted to bring you something new and fresh that you can apply to your own lives regardless of where you are in your journey of transitioning to being the best and most vibrant you possible.
No surprises here, we’re human too and we know what it’s like to experience a lack of motivation. We get how challenging and frustrating it is to be unsure of how to kick your health up to the next level and we know what it is like to feel lacking in confidence or certainty when it comes to trialing new approaches in health.
Today we are going to give you all the information you need to challenge yourselves in a structured and purposeful way that is easy to achieve and a powerful agent in arriving at your own conclusions for what works best for you.

Before we get to the, how and the what, Brett could you get the ball rolling by telling us why you think it’s important for us to be challenged and what role this can play when it comes to our health?
Continue into following points:

• Why being challenged is important
• Why 30 days
- It takes about 30 days to form a habit long enough to make an impact, short enough to be attainable- bite size chunks
- Do it for 30 days, review results and incorporate positives as new habit
• What level of challenge is good i.e. types of challenges we have done (needs to be doable- Steve can talk about SMART Goals)
- Whole 30
- 30 days raw
- 30 days of no social networking
- 30 days of no swearing
- 30 days of meditation morning and night
- 30 days of push-ups
- 30 day squat challenge
- 30 day Arise and Shine detox, fruit and veggies with supplements and bentonite
- 30 days of cold showers
- 30 days of Bikram yoga
• Set yourself up for success. Letting the people you spend time with know what you are doing and more importantly the WHY behind it. Don’t be afraid to tell them exactly what you need. I.e. I get up early for training and therefore need to go to bed by 10am each night to get my 7 hours sleep.
• When/if to stop a challenge (discuss that this is not a failure, knowing your limits is a smart thing)
• What we have learnt in the process from our challenges i.e. 30 days raw resulted in us incorporating more fresh veggies into our daily nutrition as well as upping the amount of raw food we consumed. Outcome was that we realized that even though we were eating pretty clean and sticking to Paleo principles we were lacking appropriate quantity of vegetables in our food and relying too much on sweet potato and broccoli
• The importance of reflecting on the challenge and working out what was good and how it can compliment your daily life--review, keep and discard

Here’s the thing, the next 30 days are going to happen regardless, that’s a fact. So why not take action and try something new for the next 30 days. You can make an impact by creating a new habit. You’re in control so why not take positive steps that will improve the quality of your health and your life. That Paleo Show are here to help. We want to motivate and inspire you. We would like to invite you all to join our 30 day challenge group on our face book page “That Paleo Show” Here you will be able to participate in one or all of our 30 day challenges in a supportive and positive environment with people that genuinely want to see you succeed.

Steve are you happy to tell our listeners what our challenges will be?
30 days of gratitude
30 day squat challenge
Increase consumption of veggies daily and start each day with a glass of water for 30 days

We cannot wait for you all to join us and to start seeing notable changes in your daily lives and you’re ready to take it to the next level Brett is going to tell you all about a special event coming up very shortly.

Well there it is thank you for letting us bring a little piece of Aussie wellness to you all today. We hope you all enjoyed the show as much as we did, make sure you tell us what you think and find out more about Paleo Café Cave Camp at www.thatpaleoshow.com Get involved by liking us on Facebook and following us on instagram, and we’ll see you on our 30 day challenge face book group. Bariatric physicians and New York Times bestselling authors Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades are our guests today in this LLVLC Show Classic from our golden archives in Episode 804 of "The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show."

In today's LLVLC Show Classic episode, we go back in time to the first time Jimmy ever met Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades, authors of the bestselling book Protein Power: The High-Protein/Low Carbohydrate Way to Lose Weight, Feel Fit, and Boost Your Health-in Just Weeks!, at the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP) conference in Phoenix, Arizona several years ago. He asked the dynamic low-carb duo for an interview during the conference and they graciously accepted his invitation.

Listen in as they share about why belly fat is harder to burn as you get older and what to do about it, which is better to consume between fat and protein, why the “slow-burn” weight lifting technique may be better for you than traditional resistance training methods, some of the more absurd dietary delusions espoused by vegan proponents like Dr. Dean Ornish, the bias that exists from people when looking at the latest scientific studies on nutrition, Dr. Mike’s response to the brouhaha that arose between him and Anthony Colpo, and the tortuous yet effective intermittent fasting concept. This podcast was so chock full of a goldmine of content that we hope you enjoy from our archives.

Then we'll also share Jimmy's follow-up interview with the Eades when they released their book The 6-Week Cure for the Middle-Aged Middle: The Simple Plan to Flatten Your Belly Fast! Listen in for details about this low-carb plan born out of necessity when they started their own television show to help those people in the middle of life who need a bit of belly-flattening that works. This is an LLVLC Show Classic episode for the history books! ENJOY!

Former research scientist, blogger, podcaster, and author Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, PhD and blogger, podcaster, and author Stacy Toth are our special guest co-hosts in Episode 803 of "The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show."

We've got an outstanding pair of guest hosts who know their way around a health podcast as the co-hosts of their very own successful iTunes health podcast called "The Paleo View." They are Dr. Sarah Ballantyne from "The Paleo Mom" blog and Stacy Toth from "Paleo Parents" and they are both self-professed nutrient-seekers. These two lovely ladies share their inspirational stories, both of them losing and maintaining over 100-pound weight loss, battling with autoimmune diseases, and arriving at the realization that the key to their health was a focus on eating the most nutrient-dense foods possible.

Listen in as Sarah and Stacy discuss the extensive research Sarah did for her brand new Victory Belt Publishing book The Paleo Approach: Reverse Autoimmune Disease and Heal Your Body that helped her realize the key role that nutrient-deficiency plays in all chronic disease, what micronutrients are most deficient in theAmerican diet, how a standard Paleo, low-carb, or primal diet might be deficient in these key nutrients, especially vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin K2, vitamin E, zinc, magnesium and folate, and why it's better to seek whole food sources of nutrients instead of supplements. You won't want to miss what Sarah and Stacy have to share to help you become a nutrient-seeker, too.

  • 0:00 - Welcome to Livin' La Vida Low Carb with your guest hosts Stacy and Sarah!
    • This is Stacy and Sarah's second time guest hosting on The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show podcast - check out the first episode here
    • More on Stacy
      • Lost over 100 pounds, and has maintained that weight-loss through diet and lifestyle
      • In the last year she has developed a passion for lifting heavy things and most recently won her first ever competition, a Strongman Competition
      • She has three boys and a wonderful stay-at-home husband to help her keep everything a float
      • Everyone in the family eats a paleo diet
      • Matt and Stacy are authors of Eat Like a DinosaurBeyond Bacon, the e-book 3 Phase Paleo, and the upcoming Real Life Paleo
    • More on Sarah
      • She has a PhD in Medical Biophysics and use to do medical research before becoming a stay-at-home mom
      • Her decision to become a stay-at-home mom was largely influenced by her health, as she was struggling with obesity
      • She has also lost and maintained and an over 100 pound weight-loss
      • Previously, Sarah also was struggling with a number of autoimmune diseases, which led her to the paleo diet and to start blogging
      • Her first book The Paleo Approach was released in January - it is a science and guidebook that explains the principles of a paleo diet and the extra mile that someone with an immune or autoimmune issue needs to go to regulate their immune system with diet
      • The companion cookbook, The Paleo Approach Cookbook, will be released in August
      • Stacy notes that Sarah is also a Canadian
  • 4:33 - Stacy and Sarah's Stance on Paleo
    • Both Stacy and Sarah define themselves as nutrient seekers, which is how they define what they are interested in consuming without putting a specific label on it
    • Overtime both of their diets have evolved into this model, and they have each gained an interest in consuming the foods that are the most nutrient dense in an enjoyable way
    • 3 Phase Paleo was the first of the Paleo Parent books where they talked about their three phase approach to not only removing certain foods, but on replacing the foods you are removing with nutrient dense ones instead
    • The Paleo Approach is another excellent resource that focuses on the 'adding in' and how beneficial this approach is to your health and wellbeing
    • Stacy reflected on how her diet and lifestyle evolved over time, and what happened that led her to her current food philosophy
    • Sarah shared her health journey and what led her to seek out a nutrient dense approach to living, specifically what inspired her to think about her diet differently
    • Stacy and Sarah chatted about organ meat and their recommendation for consuming organ meat at least twice a week
    • Sarah points out that many people have mental blocks around organ meat, and both Stacy and Sarah had to learn to like organ meat (check out both The Paleo Mom's recipe index and Paleo Parent's index for recipes that disguise organ meats)
  • 21:48 - Nutrient Deficiencies and How to Counteract
    • A Paleo or primal diet may be deficient in a number of minerals, vitamins and fat-soluble vitamins
    • Sarah points out that she looks at her nutrient goals over the course of the week, and why zinc intake is one of her main focuses, which she likes to incorporate through canned oysters, but shellfish in general will provide you with zinc
    • Red meat, like organ meat, leafy greens, especially spinach, and some nuts and seeds are also high in zinc
    • Sarah shared on why zinc is such an important mineral and how it impacts functions within the body
    • Stacy's boys really like clams and they go with the canned kind, which makes it an affordable option
    • Specifically for Stacy, she focuses on incorporating bone broth, which is rich in glycine and many others minerals
    • Offal and shellfish are both synergistically rich in vitamins A, D and K2
    • Liver is so rich in nutrients that you could consume it once a week and meet your vitamin A needs
    • Consuming A, D and K2 are absolutely critical for bone health, dental health, and connective tissue and joint health
    • Vitamin E is another nutrient that many are deficient in, which comes primarily from green vegetables and nuts and seeds
    • Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate, and folate is a B vitamin
    • Folic acid is not efficiently absorbed and it is better for our bodies to simply have folate instead
    • Folate is high in green vegetables, tropical fruits and citrus fruits - citrus is overall a rockstar food because of how nutrient it is
    • Magnesium is not the easiest nutrient to get, as we primarily get it through large portions of dark leafy greens, which doesn't happen to be a prominent food in most folks diets
    • However, Stacy points out that chocolate has magnesium
    • Bananas, plantains, citrus fruits, figs and a lot of dried fruits are high in magnesium
    • Eat your vegetables, and your liver, and your citrus fruit, and your bone broth, and render your own lard from pasture raised pigs when you feel ready (Beyond Bacon can teach you how to easily do this)
  • 41:00 - Closing Thoughts
    • If there is one thing you should do from what you learned on this week's show, Sarah suggests that folks work on adding micronutrient mindfulness to their actions
    • Simply have the topic of nutrient density on your radar and start to think through your choices from that standpoint
    • And don't worry right now about whether or not it is tasty, there are many ways to hide these foods and to trick your palate so that you can warm up to it slowly
    • Stacy's tip is to be prepared - it is when you will eat your best and with mindful decisions
      • What do I need to do this week to make sure I am getting seafood?
        • Green vegetables?
        • Broth, organ meat, or whatever you are looking to try?
  • 48:11 - Closing
    • It has been awesome joining this week's show as guest hosts!
    • If you enjoyed Sarah and Stacy's guest show - be sure to find them at The Paleo ViewThe Paleo Mom, and the Paleo Parents
    • Thank you everyone!

Neurobiologist, obesity researcher, author and lecturer Dr. Stephan Guyenet, PhD is our guest today for this LLVLC Show Classic from our golden archives in Episode 801 of "The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show."

In today's LLVLC Show Classic episode, we're so happy to present to you one of the great unsung heroes in the Paleo community in University of Washington neurobiologist and nutritional health expert Dr. Stephan Guyenet from the “Whole Health Source” blog. He has been one of the leading voices of the science supporting the consumption of healthy fats and traditional Paleolithic types of diets. Since the original airing of this interview with Jimmy, Dr. Guyenet has become most famous for promoting the idea of "food reward" in obesity and in 2013 joined forces with Dan Pardi from "Dan's Plan" on a weight and health effort called the Ideal Weight Program.

Listen in to hear Jimmy and Dr. Guyenet discuss how and why he got interested in the subject of health, where he sees the Paleo and low-carb movement going in the future, his thinking about the perception of sugar versus fat in American culture, how MSG mimics sugar in the body, why grains respond different in some people than others, why grinding, soaking, and fermenting grains is so important if you are going to consume them, why eating a 100% whole grain bread is unnatural, why the calorie theory is not as relevant to body fat regulation as we’ve been led to believe, how your body will defend a “set point” where it wants to keep your body weight at, the role of leptin resistance in growing fat mass, producing hunger, and slowing calorie-burning, why insulin is not as critical as leptin, the positive role of gut flora and bacteria in the body, why the polymer oligofructose (a form of inulin) promotes fat loss, the exercise component in fat loss and a healthy lifestyle, why sprints and circuit training is most effective for increasing insulin sensitivity and reducing body fat, the impact of Gary Taubes’ Good Calories Bad Calories, the distinction between a heart attack, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, the rise and fall in cigarette smoking correlating with heart disease, the public confusion about what living healthy is all about, and so much more. As you can tell from this LLVLC Show Classic interview, Dr. Stephan Guyenet is a very intelligent voice of reason in the pursuit of weight loss and optimizing health.

Paleo podcaster and blogger Angelo Coppola is our special guest host with interview guest UK-based obesity and low-carb diet specialist Zoe Harcombe in Episode 799 of "The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show."

Jimmy has hand-selected all of the fantastic guest hosts
you've been hearing over the past few months while he's been away writing his next book Keto Clarity: Your Definitive Guide to the Benefits of a Low-Carb, High-Fat Diet. And today we have one of his favorite fellow health podcasters filling in for him in the velvet-voiced Angelo Coppola from the "Latest in Paleo" podcast and the "Humans Are Not Broken" blog. Listen in as he deconstructs the recent study that made headlines around the world declaring, "Meat and cheese may be as bad as smoking." Angelo invites on a British nutritional health specialist named Zoe Harcombe to join him for an interview where they dive much deeper into this study than what was done in the mainstream media. He also draws from a recent article written by Denise Minger to share what could be much more useful advice for longevity and extendinglife than this so-called study.

Anti-sugar advocate and bestselling author Dr. Nancy Appleton, PhD is our guest today for this LLVLC Show Classic from our golden archives in Episode 798 of "The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show."

A transformation has been happening in recent years regarding the way we look at sugar and its impact on our health. Thanks to people like Dr. Robert Lustig and his viral Internet lecture "Sugar: The Bitter Truth (with 4.5+ million views!), New York Times journalist Gary Taubes writing about how toxic sugar is as well as the manipulation of this fact by The Sugar Association, and New York Times bestselling author Diane Sanfilippo encouraging people to do a 21-day sugar detox, a bright light is shining down on all the negative health effects of consuming this sweet white stuff. In fact, the prestigious World Health Organization (WHO) announced in 2014 that only 5% of your daily calories should come from sugar and families around the world are conducting their own sugar-free challenges to see how well they can cope without this part of their diet they thought they could never live without. All of this has to bring a big smile to the face of today's LLVLC Show Classic episode guest Dr. Nancy Appleton who wrote a bestselling book about this very subject called Lick the Sugar Habit--IN 1988 (when Jimmy was just a sophomore in high school)!

Dr. Appleton was anti-sugar before being anti-sugar was cool. But she certainly blazed a trail with her great work penning several more books about the health effects of sugar, including Suicide by Sugar: A Startling Look at Our #1 National Addiction and Killer Colas: The Hard Truth About Soft Drinks. And she's also created a DVD film called Sweet Suicide sharing about how sugar has so easily penetrated our culture and the consequences of that. Here's a 6-minute clip of this documentary:

Listen in to today's LLVLC Show Classic episode interview as Jimmy and Dr. Appleton discuss why cutting out allergy-inducing foods is critical tohealth, whether giving up sugar cold turkey is better than doing it gradually, why consuming whole fruits is much better for your health than drinking fruit juice, the incredibly addictive nature of sugar, and so much more! Sugar is at the forefront of the health discussion in 2014 and we owe a great deal of gratitude to people like Dr. Nancy Appleton for banging this drum again and again for decades until the message finally sunk in.
