Certified Nutrition Consultants and Paleo health bloggers and podcasters Caitlin Weeks and Diane Sanfilippo are our interview guests today in Episode 888 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

It was almost exactly one year ago when we welcomed in a husband and wife team who had created an e-book of Paleo-inspired dishes with the flavors of the Mediterranean in Episode 743 featuring nutritionist, blogger and podcaster Caitlin Weeks from "Grass Fed Girl" and her professional chef husband Nabil Boumrar. When fellow nutritionist, blogger and podcaster Diane Sanfilippo from "Balanced Bites" started making these recipes herself, she contacted her publisher Victory Belt--where she has penned several books including the perennial New York Times bestselling book Practical Paleo--about making this into a paper version of the book. When Caitlin and Diane started talking about the idea, they agreed it should be a collaboration book that they work on together with Nabil and the resulting project is the brand new book Mediterranean Paleo Cooking: Over 150 Fresh Coastal Recipes for a Relaxed, Gluten-Free Lifestyle. Since Jimmy is great friends with both Caitlin and Diane, it made for a fun discussion about this incredible new Paleo recipe book. ENJOY!

Licensed clinical psychologist Melissa Grabau is our interview guest today in Episode 887 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

Have you ever stopped to wonder why some people are able to fully latch on to a lifestyle change to produce amazing results in their weight and health while others seems to lack that internal fire and motivation to make it happen for themselves? What is the difference between those who succeed and those who remain mired in the mediocrity of their current habits? This is something that is not really talked about a lot in the Paleo, primal, and low-carb communities and yet Roseville, California-based clinical psychologist Melissa Grabau, PhD identifies this as the "vital missing ingredient" in the ability of the health community to bring about real paradigm-shifting change on a massive scale. As a certified yoga teacher who integrates specific mind-body techniques from her training as a psychotherapist, Melissa has found those principles can help people make the changes they sincerely desire to make which she has outlined in her new book The Yoga of Food: Wellness from the Inside Out.

Listen in to hear Jimmy and Melissa dig deeper into why certain people change but most people don't, her own healing that took place using a Paleo diet, the deep attachment she felt to foods and why she was reluctant to shift her eating to a better way, why the Paleo community needs to do more than pay lip service to meditation and lifestyle, why any lasting change needs to happen in the mind before it happens in the body, the courage it takes to question your conditioning towards eating a certain way, why we all need a crisis in our lives to wake us up to change, the negative role anxiety plays on our lifestyle and eating habits, why people have a hard time giving up their so-called "comfort foods," how Paleo and yoga can work in unison, why so many people who are into yoga eat a vegan diet, the intimidation factor of the online health community to people in the modern food culture, how to make the message of change more palatable to the general public, and a whole lot more. This conversation gets pretty deep at moments, but it's something we definitely need to be talking a whole lot more about as the health message we are promoting becomes more and more mainstream.

We share this exclusive audio from a lecture/Q&A session our host Jimmy Moore presented at Indiana University Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana in July 2014 today in Episode 886 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

Every summer, our host Jimmy Moore takes some time away from the podcast to make his way to Southern Indiana to visit his wife Christine's relatives who live in a town called Bedford. When an internal medicine physician who uses low-carb nutrition with her patients named Dr. Sarah Hallberg heard he would be traveling to her home state during the July 4th weekend this year, she invited Jimmy to come to speak to her patients and hospital colleagues at Indiana University Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana about the content his bestselling 2013 book Cholesterol Clarity: What The HDL Is Wrong With My Numbers? as well as a sneak peek at his not-yet-released at the time August 5, 2014 book release Keto Clarity: Your Definitive Guide to the Benefits of a Low-Carb, High-Fat Diet.

There were 100+ people in attendance at this standing-room-only event over the Independence Day holiday weekend and Jimmy delivered the cholesterol lecture he was going to give (but gave up his time slot to another speaker) on this year's Low-Carb Cruise entitled "12 Things We’ve Gotten All Wrong About Cholesterol." Listen in to hear Jimmy briefly share about his success with the low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet, the 12 major flaws in the way we currently look at cholesterol and heart disease, a very open question and answer session that garnered a wide variety of fascinating questions from the attendees very interested about learning more about the ketogenic diet, and so much more. This event was such an overwhelming success, they've already invited Jimmy Moore to return again in the summer 2015 to give a full lecture on ketosis. ENJOY this exclusive audio lecture from your favorite podcast host.

Retired family medicine physician Dr. Ken Peters and his enthusiastic wife Peggy Holloway are our interview guests today in Episode 885 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

You know how sometimes you meet a man and wife who were meant to be together? Well, today's interview guests certainly fit within that category in a big way and they have quite the story to tell about how they discovered the powerful effects of a low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet which helps them run circles around their fellow long-distance biking challenges. They are Omaha, Nebraska-based married couple Dr. Ken Peters and Peggy Holloway. If you have read the success stories chapter in Jimmy latest book Keto Clarity, then you will already know about the fascinating story of these two seniors--Ken is 72 and Peggy is 61--who got on board with nutritional ketosis and now can't shut up about it with anyone and everyone they come across. After Peggy was a guest friend on Jimmy's Friday podcast "Low-Carb Conversations" in Episode 123, several listeners asked for her to be on "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show" along with her husband to talk more about how they incorporate keto into their active lifestyle. You asked for it and now you've got it! ENJOY!

Periodontist and primal nutrition practitioner Dr. Alvin Danenberg is our interview guest today in Episode 884 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

In the context of ancestral health, a lot of focus tends to be on weight loss, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. But there are enthusiasts all across the broad spectrum of the medical profession who are taking the principles of low-carb, Paleo, primal and real food directly to their patients to help them improve the aspects of their health related to their field of expertise. That's exactly what a South Carolina-based nutritional periodontist named Dr. Alvin Danenberg is now doing for his patients after discovering the ancestral lifestyle in early 2013.

Listen in to hear Jimmy and Dr. Danenberg discuss why he shifted from being a traditional periodontist to using more modern methods for treating gum disease, how he uses a laser-based LANAP® (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) protocol, how he never heard of the work of Dr. Weston A. Price in any of his formal medical education, the role that ancestral nutrition plays in his periodontal practice, the advanced training he's received in ancestral nutrition from the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health as well as The Center for Mind-Body Medicine in 2013, his completion in July 2014 to become a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner and in September 2014 becoming a Certified Primal Blueprint Expert (Mark Sisson's new certification program), and the clinical study he has designed using real food supplements to see what happens to gum disease.

Former Navy SEAL, medical doctor and sleep medicine specialist Dr. Kirk Parsley is our interview guest today in Episode 883 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

Sleep (along with stress) is perhaps one of the biggest non-dietary factors that plays such an instrumental part in the weight and health success or failure that people tend to have. If you get an adequate amount of restful, rejuvenating sleep in bed at night, then your health will be rewarded for giving it what it wants. But for most people, they are living their lives on a significant sleep deficit and that is taking a major toll on their quality of living that cannot be ignored any long according to Dr. Kirk Parsley, MD, who served as the Naval Special Warfare’s expert on Sleep Medicine and is certified in hormonal modulation lecturing extensively on sleep, wellness, and hormonal optimization. He is working on a book on sleep optimization, but caught the attention of people like Robb Wolf because of a TEDxReno talk he gave on the subject of sleep last month called America's biggest problem.

DR. KIRK PARSLEY'S IMPASSIONED TEDX TALK ON SLEEP

America's biggest problem | Kirk Parsley | TEDxReno

Listen in to hear Jimmy and Dr. Parsley discuss his story being an active member of the Navy SEALS team, why he bases his lifestyle philosophy for wellness on evolutionary principles, how most chronic health problems of today are completely unnatural and unnecessary, the indelible connection between sleep and hormones, and a whole lot more! You'll quickly notice Dr. Parsley is 100% committed to helping people live the highest quality of life possible, and achieve their health, performance, and longevity goals. ENJOY!

A legendary founding member of the modern Paleo movement Ray Audette is our interview guest today in Episode 882 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

When you think about the Paleo movement these days, so many great names come to mind--Robb Wolf, Mark Sisson, Sarah Fragoso, Nora Gedgaudas, and more. But two decades ago, there were very few people sharing about how our ancestors ate and lived in pursuing and maintaining optimal health. It was the very infancy of the modern Paleolithic diet advocacy with names like Dr. Boyd Eaton, Dr. Mike Eades, and Dr. Loren Cordain. But one man who helped merge the message of Paleo with low-carb, high-fat diets was a self-professed "computer nerd" named Ray Audette who researched and studied the Paleo lifestyle to help him with his own health issues which all got considerably better once he made the switch over to a concept he refers to in the title of his book about it called Neanderthin: Eat Like a Caveman to Achieve a Lean, Strong, Healthy Body. This is now considered a classic Paleo book and the Kindle version is now available with new information if you have never read it before. Listen in to hear Jimmy and Ray discuss how he was talking about Paleo long ago, why he has decided to make a comeback of sorts after all the new voices have been on the scene, and so much more! Ray is one-of-a-kind and you'll find that out very quickly in today's interview.

Cardiologist Dr. Eric Thorn and registered nurse Marylou Van Hintum are our interview guests today in Episode 881 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

One of the most exciting developments that has been happening within the medical community over the past few years is a growing tide of healthcare providers who have become frustrated by the failure of the traditional model for medicine and are willing to look outside the box in treating their patients through nutrition and lifestyle modalities as the first option rather than so quickly turning to a prescription medication. Today's podcast interview guests certainly fit that mold. They are an Arlington, Virginia-based cardiologist and obesity medicine physician named Dr. Eric Thorn and a real food-based registered nurse named Marylou VanHintum. Together they joined forces to open the Center for Cardio-Metabolic Health and Weight Loss in September 2012 providing medically-supervised, nutritional rehabilitation to treat metabolic syndrome, promote weight loss, reduce risk for heart disease, and improve overall quality of life. The nutritional plan they incorporated with their patients is a low-carb, high-fat diet with real, whole foods that help heal the damage that has accumulated over years, even decades, and the patients receive personalized follow-up to help them with their specific individualized needs to lose weight and get healthy.

Listen in to hear Jimmy, Dr. Thorn, and Marylou share about how they came to low-carb nutrition from within the traditional medical establishment, how they came to realize how low-carb nutrition could be used as a powerful tool for promoting optimal health, why weight loss isn't really the primary focus of their work with patients, how a cardiologist is able to talk about eating high-fat foods like bacon without getting ostracized by his colleagues, the impact of stress on your health during transitional periods in our lives (as Dr. Thorn and Marylou are currently going through parting ways but continuing their work with patients), and a whole lot more! Jimmy met these two at the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP) meeting a couple of years ago and this was such an intriguing discussion about the future of health and the intricate role nutrition will have to play in patient health in the coming years.

Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and medical bariatrician Dr. Spencer Nadolsky is our interview guest today in Episode 880 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

Self-experimentation when it comes to the subject of nutrition and health is an absolute must. The quantified self movement is growing by leaps and bounds because patients are so fed up with the failure of the current model for healthy living being used by conventional medicine that they've grabbed back control of their own health and doing their own n=1 experiments to test how their body responds to any given stimuli. But today's podcast interview guest isn't just some patient--he was traditionally trained in medical school and has been treating patients himself as their medical doctor. His name is Dr. Spencer Nadolsky (listen to his previous interview on the show in Episode 552), an osteopath and obesity medicine specialist in Virginia, who decided to test the controversial dietary waters by shifting his meals over from low-carb to high-carb to see what would happen.

Have your Chocolate and Eat it Too!

Listen in to hear Jimmy and Dr. Nadolsky discuss his recent bodybuilding show, why counting macronutrients and calories were a critical element in helping him reach his body composition goals while maintaining excellent metabolic health, his foray into wanting to experiment with a high-carb diet to see what would happen, the reaction he received from the low-carb community to his n=1, and a whole lot more. It's an interesting chat about keeping an open mind and never getting too dogmatic about what you believe regarding nutritional health. ENJOY!

Nutrition and personal fitness training expert Mike Sheridan is our interview guest today in Episode 879 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

In this day and age of instant information at your fingertips with the click of a mouse searching the Internet on virtually any topic you want to learn more about, it can be a bit daunting trying to sift through it all to know what to believe about any given subject. The challenge in the world of diet, fitness, and health is the fact that there are so many cultural norms that people simply believe at face value that have never been proven by any research--and yet people buy into them hook, line, and sinker. This doesn't sit well with a nutrition and fitness expert named Mike Sheridan who believes the public deserves to hear the truth about what we REALLY know about nutrition rather than the propaganda that has been put out there in the mainstream of our culture regarding this subject.

To that end, he's written a couple of books that take on the common wisdom on diet and fitness and turn them on their head with Eat Meat And Stop Jogging: 'Common' Advice On How To Get Fit Is Keeping You Fat And Making You Sick and Live It, NOT Diet!: Forget Cardio. Forget Calories. Listen in to hear Jimmy and Mike have an in-depth conversation about the role of fat in the diet, why carbohydrates really aren't necessary for human health, the nonsensical nature of the calories in/calories out message, how people are causing more harm than good engaging in cardio exercise, his passion for helping people realize how easy it is to get and stay fit, why he believes conventional wisdom has people "overworked and underfed," and his driving philosophy to enjoy what he is doing so that it never feels like work. You'll get to hear all of this and a whole lot more in today's fun and encouraging interview!
