We look back at the Best Moments Of 2012 in our final episode of the year today in Episode 633 of The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

What a year it has been here at "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show" podcast! We had another outstanding slate of fabulous interview guests for you to enjoy, learn from and glean from the wisdom they shared each week. Since this will be our final episode of 2012, we decided to look back on the year that was 2012 and share with you some of the highlights of the very best moments of the year on the podcast. There were so many great interviews this year and this is by no means a comprehensive listing. But it's a representative sample of some memorable episodes from 2012.

As I'm preparing to take some much-needed time off in the months of November and December from my ruthless podcast schedule before starting it all back up again in January 2013, it's also time to take a look back at 2012 to find out who you thought were the best "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show" podcast guests of the year. This has been an annual tradition for me since I started the show and it's always fun to learn who my listeners enjoyed the most. Rather than making you only choose one (that would be cruel, I know), I give you the chance to choose up to FIVE interview guests you'd like to hear more from in a follow-up interview. Paleo and gluten-free diet advocates Cain & Tammy Credicott are our guests today in Episode 622 of The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

It's always interesting to hear about how people find their way into the Paleo community and today's interview guests have quite the journey to share. In 2008, Cain Credicott was diagnosed with Celiac disease which required him to immediately begin following a strictly gluten-free diet. He and his wife Tammy became so passionate about this that they decided to open up a gluten-free bakery to help others with some form of gluten sensitivity enjoy delicious and healthy baked goods. Unfortunately for Cain, simply cutting gluten out of his diet didn't do the trick to make him better like he had hope. It was at this point that he decided to try a gluten-free vegetarian and even a gluten-free vegan diet which predictably made him get even worse. It wasn't until Cain stumbled upon information about the Paleo diet that real improvement in his Celiac disease began to happen.

Former vegan and UK-based author John Nicholson is our guest today in Episode 621 of The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

Veganism has become so entrenched in our society as the epitome of "healthy living" that so many people buy into it fully without understanding the hidden consequences of eating this way. Just ask John Nicholson who committed over half of his life to vegetarianism and ultimately to being a vegan for 18 of those years until he began noticing a rather precipitous decline in his health while gaining weight. It wasn't until his 32-year life partner Dawn, who had been there with John from the time he first embraced plant-based eating, suggested they start eating meat again to regain their health that he made the fateful decision to consume animal products again for the first time in 26 years.

Their switch from a low-fat vegan diet to a high-fat meat-based diet was aided in part by the influence of a former vegan named Lierre Keith and her groundbreaking book exposing the dangers of vegetarian/vegan diets called The Vegetarian Myth (listen to my interview with Lierre in Episode 334 here). John experienced such a quick and dramatic improvement in so many aspects of his health once he added meat back into his diet again that he began on a mission to tell as many people as he could about how animal-based foods saved his health and life. He published a fantastic book about his experience in 2012 called The Meat Fix: How a Lifetime of Healthy Living Nearly Killed Me! that he hopes will influence other disillusioned vegans who desperately need to put some meat back into their diet again.

After growing increasingly frustrated by the ignorance displayed by his nutrition professors in college about the effectiveness of low-carbohydrate diets in producing better weight loss and improvements in key health markers, Larry took it upon himself to come up with an idea to begin compiling data from real people who have seen results eating a Paleo, low-carb, real foods-based nutritional plan. And he went on to lose an extraordinary amount of weight off of his body--280 pounds!

After such an incredible turnaround came to this man who once believed he was destined by his genetics to be fat for his entire life, he then set out to help others who are struggling with their own need and desire to lose weight and be healthy. At first he thought he should do that by becoming a personal trainer. But when Dr. Jeffrey Galvin from the Concord, NC-based Vitality Medical Wellness Institute heard about Jesse's story, he had something bigger in mind for him. Dr. Galvin decided to give Jesse a job in January 2012 as a health and wellness advocate to provide nutrition advice and inspiration to their patients. This former agoraphobic shut-in is now doing public speaking events and one-on-one counseling to others who are in the kind of seemingly helpless, hopeless situation he found himself in.

Associate professor of medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center and diet researcher Dr. Christopher Gardner is our guest today on The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

Landmark nutritional research was conducted by Dr. Christopher Gardner and published in the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association in March 2007 called A TO Z: A Comparative Weight Loss Study. In that study, this devout vegetarian advocate (for moral reasons) found that the Atkins low-carb diet produced more weight loss and better health improvements than the low-fat Ornish, moderate-carb Zone or standard American LEARN diet. This was obviously big news in the low-carb community at the time and Dr. Gardner went on the lecture circuit to discuss his study results, including a May 2008 lecture at the Stanford School of Medicine posted on YouTube called The Battle of the Diets: Is Anyone Winning (At Losing?).

It's been a few years since that historical JAMA study sent shock waves through the medical community. What's been going on with Dr. Gardner's continued research into this subject and how has his point of view changed regarding diet and health over the past five years? Nephrologist and low-carb obesity medicine practitioner Dr. Keith Runyan is our guest today onThe Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

When you train to become a medical doctor, it’s generally understood that you will come out of school with an adept knowledge about anatomy, histology, embryology, physiology, biochemistry, cell biology, and genetics which all directly impact people’s health. But a glaring omission in this educational piece is the subject of nutrition and the indelible connection it plays on chronic diseases and obesity. This is something that Dr. Keith Runyan had to discover for himself beginning in 1996 when he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

When he realized he had diabetes, this St. Petersburg, FL-based nephrologist attempted to follow the American Diabetes Association recommended low-fat diet with a dietary intake of 50-60% carbohydrates. He thought he needed to eat this way along with balancing out his diet with insulin use, but his blood sugar control was still too erratic to be considered a success after two years of eating this way. That’s when Dr. Runyan decided to dibble-dabble with the low-carb strategies suggested by former podcast guest Dr. Richard Bernsteinand in 2011 took at serious look at both the Paleo diet and the low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet to bring even better management of his diabetes as well as fueling his newfound passion for participating in triathlons. The results have been phenomenal.

Hypoglycemia has virtually vanished. Triglycerides have dropped. HDL cholesterol has increased. C-reactive protein (marker of inflammation) has plummeted. Paleo nutritional health expert Nell Stephenson is back again as our guest today on The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

We first introduced you to the work Nell is doing in the Paleo community in September 2010 and since that time she's been busy working on spreading the message to a much wider audience. After collaborating with Professor Loren Cordain and Lorrie Cordain on The Paleo Diet Cookbook in 2011, she's back in 2012 with a fabulous new book of her own entitled Paleoista: Gain Energy, Get Lean, and Feel Fabulous With the Diet You Were Born to Eat. Nell says that many people, women especially, can be turned off by the whole "caveman" aspect of the Paleo diet. While she says that approach is perfectly fine as a way to attract people to the lifestyle, she has a different take on Paleo that is more suited to modern-day living. That's why she created this new term Paleoista to mash together Paleo and fashionista is different twist on eating this way. Professional writer and published author Nancy Kennedy is our guest today on The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

Several years ago, Jimmy received an e-mail from Nancy Kennedy asking him about his Atkins diet weight loss success story and explained that she was writing a book about how people have lost weight. Austin, TX-based fitness and health experts and PaleoFX founders Keith and Michelle Norris are our guests today on The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

Something special happened down there on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin, Texas in the middle of March 2012. After Keith and Michelle Norris had a meeting of the minds with Kevin Cottrell just 150 days earlier envisioning a conference that would foster collaboration among fitness professionals, healthcare professionals, nutritionists, research scientists and laypersons who approach their respective practices from an evolutionary perspective in order to successfully address modern health challenges through the application of ancestral based theory in practice, even they were skeptical they could pull it off.

But that's precisely what they did when the inaugural PaleoFX Ancestral Momentum - Theory to Practice Symposium officially got underway on March 14, 2012 at the Stark Center during the same week as the uber-popular South By Southwest (SXSW) music and film festival. Austin was hopping busy, but that didn't stop Paleo enthusiasts from having a great time learning and engaging in PaleoFX!

From the volunteers (the real heroes of this event!) who worked tirelessly to make this event an overwhelming success to the many guest speakers and panelists who shared from their wisdom and experience, this was one of the most interactive nutritional health conferences Jimmy has ever been to! Medical doctor and nutrition science blogger Dr. Peter Attia is our guest today on The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

Prior to 2010, Dr. Peter Attia was a typical medical doctor who was trained well in prescribing medications for a variety of chronic diseases. But he decided the typical high-carb, low-fat diet he was on was not optimal for managing his weight and health and he embarked on an incremental journey to start livin’ la vida low-carb. First he cut sugar, then other white carbohydrates, then starchy carbohydrates and finally cut carbs down to 50g daily along with reducing protein to 120g per day. The result was lower body fat, improved cardiovascular markers and a marked improvement in his athletic performance.

Dr. Attia has continued to learn everything he can get his hands on about nutrition and experimenting on himself to see what works. Through his friendship with former podcast guest Gary Taubes and others, everything he thought he knew about nutrition was just plain wrong. That’s why he decided to throw his hat into the arena of ideas by creating his new blog “The War On Insulin (And The Defense Of Fat)” in 2012 to help communicate the lessons he has learned from his perspective as a physician.
