Botanist/evolutionary biologist researcher and professor Dr. George Diggs, Jr. is our guest today in Episode 706 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

diggs-bookIn the many interviews we have shared on this podcast, we often lament that there is very little education provided to the future physicians on the subject of nutrition as it relates to health. This obvious problem with healthcare is partly to blame for why obesity and chronic illness continues to become worse and worse. But thankfully there are people like today's interview guest Dr. George Diggs, Jr., a professor in the Department of Biology and Center for Environmental Studies at Austin College in Sherman, Texas as well as a Research Associate at the Botanical Research Institute of Texas.

Jimmy met Dr. Diggs in person at the 2011 Ancestral Health Symposium in Los Angeles and became enamored by this Paleo-minded professor teaching future medical school students about evolutionary nutritional health principles. In fact, he co-wrote a book with his like-minded colleague Dr. Kerry Brock that is being used as a textbook in a classroom setting called The Hunter-Gatherer Within: Health and the Natural Human Diet that is the first-of-its-kind incorporating Paleo health concepts into a mainstream educational setting. Cool!

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Diggs discuss his interest in the intersection of diet/nutrition, evolution, and health over the past decade, why he decided to write a book about evolutionary health, why the non-profit Botanical Research Institute of Texas published their first-ever diet and health book, how this book is being used in college classrooms to teach about Paleo principles, why the target audience for the book is the "non-science" college students and the general public, the health problems associated with our carbohydrate-laden modern diet, the problem with consuming plants that have defended themselves chemically against predators and so much more! This is a fascinating discussion fans of Paleo, primal and low-carb diets will eat up.

If you want to learn about how to implement the Paleo or low-carb lifestyle into your daily routine, then there are plenty of people in the community who are ready, willing and able to tell you exactly what to eat, what not to eat, how to exercise, the supplements you should be taking, ways to enhance your sleep and whole host of other practical ways to make it happen. But today's podcast guest James Clear believes the best key to finding success--in weight loss, your pursuit of health, or really ANYTHING--is in formulating and fostering good habits and behaviors that will set you on the right path. His personal mission is to make it easier for people to live healthy, be happy, and contribute to the world around them.

James does this most effectively by combining his vast knowledge of the latest academic research with real-world experiences that provide strategies for rethinking and improving health, fitness, and medicine. Through that, he uses the science of habit formation and behavioral psychology to make it dead simple for people to make real, lasting changes in their lives. Restaurant owner and low-carb Paleo diet advocate Edmund Woo is our guest today in Episode 704 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

saskatoonIn late 2012, Jimmy Moore was driving around town in his car in Spartanburg, South Carolina and heard an advertisement from a local restaurant in the neighboring town of Greenville boasting of a "Low-Carb Paleo" meal plan service. Naturally, this piqued his curiosity since that's the core message of what we share here at this podcast. So he contacted Edmund Woo, the owner of Saskatoon Steaks Fish Wild Game Restaurant, to inquire about how he got interested in low-carb and Paleo diets.

Edmund said he's a huge fan of CrossFit and through that he learned about and embraced the concepts of Paleo living as espoused by people like Robb Wolf and Mark Sisson. Listen in as Jimmy took this show on the road and went to meet Edmund Woo in person at his beautiful restaurant to talk about his passion for helping people get healthy the low-carb Paleo way, why he decided to start a meal service catering to this way of eating, his personal nutritional coaching of these customers, why he doesn't think a Paleo-only restaurant could possibly survive as a business model and so much more! It's inspiring to see a local restaurant owner trying to influence the customers in his area by educating them on what healthy low-carb Paleo living is all about.

[powerpress]

vitamin-kWe've all heard about the benefits of supplementing our diet with things like calcium and high-dose Vitamin D. But have you ever stopped to think about whether that is really necessary to attain optimal health? Even more importantly, what if taking those actions actually can be more harmful than helpful? This is something that motivates a naturopath named Dr. Kate Rhéaume-Bleue who has been working voraciously in recent year to spread the truth about a little-known vitamin hardly anyone is talking about--Vitamin K2. She's the author of a fabulous book on the subject called Vitamin K2 and the Calcium Paradox: How a Little-Known Vitamin Could Save Your Life which throws the door open on chronic health issues like osteoporosis, heart disease and even wrinkles. Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Kate take an even closer look at the vital role that Vitamin K2 can play in the health of everyone!

[powerpress]

burzynski2There are so many alternative therapies for diseases people are dealing with that are just not getting the exposure that they properly deserve. And it was the work of a Houston, TX-based Dr. Stanlisow Burzynski using a process known as antineoplastons with cancer patients that attracted the attention of filmmaker Eric Merola to create a documentary highlighting the success of this alternative and controversial method. We first interviewed Eric in Episode 512 in 2011 about his explosive Burzynski: The Movie. Now he's back again in 2013 with a brand new film entitled Burzynski: Cancer Is Serious Business Part 2 that features the real-life stories of patients who have seen their cancer improved thanks to Dr. Burzynski. Listen in as Jimmy and Eric talk about the reason why he made another documentary movie and those who have risen up in opposition to the work he is doing.
