Paleo health blogger J. Stanton is our interview guest today in Episode 745 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

There are a lot of really smart people in the Paleo and low-carb communities who have so much amazing information to share about nutrition and health despite not having any credentials after their name. It's not a prerequisite to have an MD, PhD, RD or any other "D" after your name to speak intelligently on the the most important topics within the context of a healthy lifestyle. Thank goodness that's true because we'd never get to experience some of the most unique and fascinating people like J. Stanton from GNOLLS.ORG. After he wrote The Gnoll Credo outlining many of the principles he had learned on his own, Stanton found like-minded people and ideas in the Paleo community and began imparting the lessons he has learned along the way about things like metabolic flexibility, hunger, calories and more through his popular web site. Listen in as Jimmy and J. Stanton dig deeper into these invaluable topics and more.

Paleo nutritionist and New York Times bestselling author Diane Sanfilippo is our interview guest today in Episode 744 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

[powerpress]

Paleo is officially on the map as a movement thanks to the emergence of key leadership from some of the biggest names in this community over the past few years. People Robb Wolf, Mark Sisson, Loren Cordain, Art DeVany, Chris Kresser, Gary Taubes, Nora Gedgaudas and many others have all become synonymous with the Paleolithic lifestyle. But when you look at who is leading the way in terms of the most popular books about Paleo, it's none of these amazing people. That distinction currently belongs to a Certified Nutrition Consultant named Diane Sanfilippo from "Balanced Bites." In August 2012, she released her incredible book Practical Paleo: A Customized Approach to Health and a Whole-Foods Lifestyle and it has gone on to become a 29-time (and counting!) New York Times bestseller--ahead of Paleo powerhouses like Wolf and Cordain:

Now Diane is back with not just one, but two superb resources to help continue the education she started with Practical Paleo. Once you start eating this, there are some people who still have issues with insatiable cravings for sugar and other crappy carbs that don't have any business being in your diet. Going through a sugar detox for a few weeks may be all that is needed to overcome these issues and this is something Diane has been helping people with for years. Her 21 Day Sugar Detox e-book has empowered tens of thousands of her clients over the years. Now she's releasing The 21-Day Sugar Detox: Bust Sugar & Carb Cravings Naturally to help many more who need that extra oomph to move them towards optimizing their health even more. And coming in December, she's got a fantastic companion book entitled The 21-Day Sugar Detox Cookbook: Over 100 Recipes for Any Program Level to arm you with even more recipes to do this the right way. Listen in as Jimmy and Diane share all about these brand new resources to take your Paleo lifestyle to the next level!

Husband-wife Paleo cookbook authors Caitlin Weeks And Nabil Bourmar are our interview guests today in Episode 743 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

One of the best parts of the tremendous growth of the Paleo movement in recent years is the incredible diversity we are seeing of the people who are involved in promoting it to others. Having a wide variety of voices giving their own take on what a Paleo-styled cuisine can look like is going to help make this way of living more accepted and go mainstream faster than anything else. This is something nutritionist and Paleo blogger Caitlin Weeks from the "Grass Fed Girl" blog along with her professional chef husband Nabil Bourmar knows just a thing or two about.

Nabil specializes in the Mediterranean cuisine he grew up with as a native of the coastal capitol Algiers, Algeria which inspired his passion of blending Arab, African and European flavors to make unique Paleo dishes unlike anything you've tasted before. With Caitlin's heavy involvement in the Paleo community in recent years, it made sense that she and Nabil would team up to create a fabulous new e-bookbook entitled Mediterranean Paleo Cookbook: Over 135 Grain-Free Recipes To Tempt Your Palate. Listen in as Jimmy speaks with Caitlin and Nabil about the unique kind of recipes inspired by Nabil's family that they share about in their e-book.

Personal trainer, Paleo blogger and podcaster Tony Federico is our interview guest today in Episode 742 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

At the recent 2013 Ancestral Health Symposium (#AHS13) in Atlanta, Georgia a couple of months back, Jimmy got to hear a lot of incredible talks about various aspects of nutrition, fitness and health. But there was one presentation that stuck out in his mind as the most innovative and applicable to his listening audience. It was shared by one of his fellow bloggers and podcasters named Tony Federico, a health and fitness specialist who is the man behind the "Live Caveman" blog and host of the "Paleo Magazine Radio" podcast.

Tony's 2013 Ancestral Health Symposium lecture was a mind-blowing one entitled "Processed Foods and Processed Friends: Is Facebook a Neolithic Agent of Disease?" that may make you put down that iPhone and step away from social media for periods of time. Tony believes that chronic daily use of social media can create dependency and is a threat to emotional and psychological well-being just as over consumption of energy dense foods can lead to diabetes, heart disease, and other diseases of civilization. Moderating the consumption of "processed friends" is just as important as moderating the consumption of processed foods for maintaining and improving total health and wellness. Hmmmm.

Listen to Jimmy and Tony share how he came up with his talk for #AHS13, the reaction he received to his lecture, the role technology should play in the life of a healthy Paleo lifestyle, why social media relationships can be just as toxic to your health as consuming processed foods, three easy ways we can reconnect with the authentic relationships we have in real life, how he became the host of "Paleo Magazine Radio," the June 2014 release of his book Paleo Grilling: A Modern Caveman's Guide to Cooking with Fire, and so much more! If you're like most of us and live virtually online more often than you do in your real life, then perhaps this podcast interview with Tony will give you some things to think about.

Paleo blogger and podcaster Kaila Prins is our interview guest today in Episode 741 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

One of the biggest unspoken, taboo topics that you rarely hear discussed within any health community is the subject of eating disorders. Anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating and more are probably a lot more common than we'd like to admit. And when you add other addictive, compulsive actions to this, it can be a recipe for health disaster all under the guise of becoming healthier. This is something our interview guest today knows more than a thing or two about. Her name is Kaila Prins from the "In My Skinny Genes" blog and she spent 13 years of her life attempting to battle both an eating disorder and exercise addiction with a variety of strategies before finding the Paleo diet. She is the voice behind the blog “In My Skinny Genes” and the deeply philosophic health podcast called “Finding Our Hunger" helping others seeking solace from their addictions.

Listen in as Jimmy and Kaila talk about her personal journey with addiction, how she endured through yo-yo diets, calorie counting, full-fledged anorexia, and even veganism for so many years of her life, how the Paleo template helped her successfully kick start and sustain her recovery, why she thinks the Paleo community should start focusing on helping people learn how to eat properly rather than weight loss or perfection, why she began her blog and how it has morphed into what it is now, her work with fellow actress Ito Aghayere on the most unique podcast in the Paleo community, how she is helping others learn how to beat their addictions as a health coach, and so much more! This was a deep conversation with someone who has become a great friend to Jimmy Moore over the past year. Share this podcast with anyone you know struggling with an eating disorder and exercise addiction.

Bestselling Paleo cookbook author and blogger Melissa Joulwan is our interview guest today in Episode 740 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

With the huge influx of Paleo and low-carb books that have come on the market in the past few years, a handful of those authors have risen to the top of the heap with bestselling books penetrating our culture with the healthy real food message. People like Diane Sanfilippo, Dr. Loren Cordain, Robb Wolf, Mark Sisson, Sarah Fragoso, Dr. William Davis, Dallas and Melissa Hartwig, and others are leading the way--but they're not alone. If you look at the top of the bestselling Paleo books charts on Amazon one of the most surprising names is someone who doesn't receive the kind of accolades for her work like she should.

Her name is Melissa Joulwan from "The Clothes Make The Girl" blog (listen to Jimmy's previous podcast interview with her in Episode 554) and her December 2011 self-published debut book release Well Fed: Paleo Recipes for People Who Love to Eat has been a phenomenal success featuring Paleo-styled recipes with an international and ethnic flair. Now she's back with a much-needed sequel book Well Fed 2: More Paleo Recipes for People Who Love to Eat (read Jimmy's Amazon review) with more of the kind of recipes and information you've come to know and love from this awesome Paleo chef!

Listen in as Jimmy and Melissa talk about the surprising success of her first book, how she got the book into Costco stores, why she started her own publishing company named after her cat Smudge, the ongoing issues in her health that required her to go on the autoimmune protocol of the Paleo diet, a sampling of Jimmy's favorite recipes from Well Fed 2, how she adapts the traditional international cuisine from old cookbooks into Paleo-friendly dishes, why this cookbook will be perfect for people on the autoimmune protocol, the distinctions she shares about between emotional appetite vs. true hunger, why you won't find any Paleo treats in her books, and so much more!

Health activist and calorie skeptic Sam Feltham is our interview guest today in Episode 739 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

Calories, calories, calories. It's all we ever hear about when it comes to weight loss and health these days. All the so-called health experts say you just need to eat less calories in your diet and exercise off more calories through activity to create a calorie deficit and you'll easily lose weight. It's as simple as that. But is it really? Skepticism about the calories in, calories out hypothesis has been growing over the past few years, even amongst mainstream public health researchers at Harvard University. Health podcaster Jonathan Bailor will be releasing a book about this topic in December 2013 entitled The Calorie Myth: How to Eat More, Exercise Less, Lose Weight, and Live Better that will challenge everything we've always believed to be true about calories. But over in the UK, there's a man who decided to take a different tactic in tackling the problem with obsessing about the quantity of calories while neglecting the quality of the calories you are consuming.

His name is Sam Feltham from "Smash The Fat" and he wanted to put this calorie thing to the ultimate test--he sacrificed himself for science to demonstrate the differences between calories consumed on a low-carb, high-fat diet vs. the calories from a low-fat, high-carb diet. In a pair of 21-day self-experiments conducted in May 2013 and then again in September 2013, Sam decided to consume a 5000+ calorie/day diet to see what would happen to his weight and measurements. Below you will see the final weigh-in results of each of these experiments to see a direct comparison of what happened:

SAM'S LCHF EXPERIMENT IN MAY 2013

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvFf6WnveqM

SAM'S HIGH-CARB EXPERIMENT IN SEPTEMBER 2013

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9evDnk7eU0

Listen in as Jimmy and Sam talk about his work in the UK to educate the public there about fitness and nutrition, his concerns over the fallacies of the calorie hypothesis, why he decided to take it upon himself to test this theory on his naturally lean body, a comparison of the kind of foods he consumed during both of his experiments, the weight comparison following his isocaloric LCHF experiment and CARB experiment, whether he experienced any withdrawal symptoms after eating 5,000+ calories a day of sugary carbage, the conclusions he has drawn so far about calories after his first two experiments, his upcoming January 2014 experiment testing Dr. John McDougall's starch-based diet, and so much more! If you're still one of those people who thinks weight loss is all about the calories, then you gotta hear from this man who is showing us all just how bogus that really is.

Ketogenic diet for cancer educator Miriam Kalamian is our interview guest today in Episode 738 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

Cancer is an ugly word in our society and rightfully so. Despite all the best efforts by the most intelligent medical researchers in the world to come up with an effective way to prevent and control this disease, most have fallen woefully short of the mark in helping people who are afflicted with this scary diagnosis. But in recent years we have been hearing about the therapeutic effects of a high-fat, moderate protein, low-carbohydrate ketogenic nutritional approach as a complementary treatment for cancer. People like Dr. Dominic D'AgostinoElaine CantinDr. Thomas SeyfriedDr. Eugene Fine and Dr. Colin Champ are on the front lines of this cutting-edge look at the power of nutrition in dealing with cancer. They are not alone.

Miriam Kalamian is a credentialed nutrition professional who found out the tragic news that her 4-year old son Raffi had a brain tumor the size of an orange in December 2004. After failing to see any improvement in Raffi's condition with all the conventional cancer treatment methods, Miriam stumbled across the ketogenic diet through the work of Boston College cancer researcher Dr. Seyfried and his book Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer. After looking into this diet further, she realized that cancer is indeed a metabolic disease and should be treated as such. When she saw how children with epilepsy are able to implement this diet into their lives therapeutically, Miriam proceeded to put Raffi on the ketogenic nutritional approach designed to produce an adequate amount of ketone bodies to serve as an alternative fuel source without exacerbating the cancer. The results Miriam saw were unbelievable and convinced her there's a lot more to the ketogenic approach than most doctors, oncologists and cancer researchers even realize.

Listen in as Jimmy and Miriam talk about her ketogenic journey with Raffi that sadly ended in April 2013, why keeping the message and implementation of a ketogenic diet simple is how to best help people with cancer, the purpose of keeping glucose levels as low as possible, why you want to increase the number ketones bodies in your blood, the critical nature of limiting protein intake for the ketogenic diet to be most effective, overcoming the fat-phobia that paralyzes people from trying keto, how the amino acid glutamine found in nearly every protein fuels cancer cells, what stress can do to unravel the benefits of a ketogenic diet approach, the importance of realizing the ketogenic diet alone is not a cure for cancer but rather another strategy in helping to manage the disease, and a whole lot more! Miriam has worked with hundreds of cancer patients educating them on how to make this work for them. We'll be hearing a lot more about ketogenic diets for cancer in the years to come, so check out this interview with one of the people helping to bring it to the masses.

Paleo blogger and author Adam Farrah is our interview guest today in Episode 737 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

As the Paleo diet becomes more and more mainstream thanks to the great work of so many bloggers, podcasters and authors who are espousing this way of eating and living, it's important to make sure the message is practical, individual and sustainable. While most Paleo advocates are genuinely attempting to do this, the message can become muddied and misunderstood as a result. That's something that drives Adam Farrah from the "Practical Paleolithic" blog to create ways to simplify the basic points that are the common thread of the Paleolithic template.

Several years ago, Adam began compiling his methodical answers to some of the most pressing questions people had for him about the Paleo diet that he put into a popular e-book. On November 22, 2013, he will be releasing a hardback version of this book entitled The Paleo Dieter's Missing Link: The Complete, Practical Guide To Living The Paleo Diet. Listen in as Jimmy and Adam talk extensively about his concerns with the Paleo community, why customizing your personal Paleo plan is essential, how the information provided in his book looks like an engineer wrote it, how he got the gig to write for Paleo Magazine, the special offer he has for people who pre-order his book, and a whole lot more. If you don't know Adam Farrah, then listen in and get to know this diamond in the rough treasure in the Paleo community.

Aussie alkaline Paleo diet advocates Ian Blair Hamilton and Cassie Bond and Erich Krauss are our interview guests today in Episode 736 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

We've got an outstanding double-header set of interviews in store for you today. Kicking us off are a husband-wife duo in Ian Blair Hamilton and Cassie Bond from Byron Bay, New South Wales in Australia. You may remember hearing Ian's voice on the podcast in recent weeks talking about his Ultrastream "Paleo Water" System. Listen in as Jimmy speaks with Ian and his wife Cassie about their reasons for following an alkaline Paleo diet, what makes the Paleo water different from other sources of water, the key minerals that water needs to be optimal for human consumption, how water becomes contaminated by our modern culture, why added hydrogen is the key to making water better, how lightning may have helped to enhance the hydrogen in the water during Paleolithic times, and more. Enjoy learning more about why our water has changed so much since hunter-gatherer times in this informative mini-interview.

You may have noticed there's been a huge influx of Paleo-themed books in recent years as the Paleo community has grown by leaps and bounds. Many of these books have been lighting up the New York Times bestsellers list and it may come as a surprise that these literary hits come from a smaller publishing imprint. That publisher is Victory Belt and the mastermind behind this company making waves is a world traveling professional kickboxer, hang glider, survival school teacher and adventure lover named Erich Krauss. He's a New York Times bestselling author in his own right and has written over 30 books.

Listen in as Jimmy speaks with Erich about his wild and adventurous expeditions around the world, how he parlayed his life experiences into a writing gig at the New York Times and other newspapers and magazines, his love for writing and frustration with the mainstream publishing world, how he got tired of being screwed by publishers that he decided to create his own publishing company, how he treats his authors differently than mainstream publishing houses, the difference between the books he publishes through Victory Belt compared to other publishers, his personal connection to the Paleo diet when he met Robb Wolf in Chico, California, his authors who have broken into the mainstream with their books, what books and authors are coming, and so much more! This is Jimmy's publisher for Cholesterol Clarity, so learn more about this company that will be doing great things in the coming years to continue bringing the message of Paleo and low-carb diets to the forefront.
