Personal trainer, Paleo blogger and podcaster Tony Federico is our interview guest today in Episode 742 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

Health activist and calorie skeptic Sam Feltham is our interview guest today in Episode 739 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

 

Calories, calories, calories. It's all we ever hear about when it comes to weight loss and health these days. All the so-called health experts say you just need to eat less calories in your diet and exercise off more calories through activity to create a calorie deficit and you'll easily lose weight. It's as simple as that. But is it really? Skepticism about the calories in, calories out hypothesis has been growing over the past few years, even amongst mainstream public health researchers at Harvard University. Health podcaster Jonathan Bailor will be releasing a book about this topic in December 2013 entitled The Calorie Myth: How to Eat More, Exercise Less, Lose Weight, and Live Better that will challenge everything we've always believed to be true about calories. But over in the UK, there's a man who decided to take a different tactic in tackling the problem with obsessing about the quantity of calories while neglecting the quality of the calories you are consuming.

His name is Sam Feltham from "Smash The Fat" and he wanted to put this calorie thing to the ultimate test--he sacrificed himself for science to demonstrate the differences between calories consumed on a low-carb, high-fat diet vs. the calories from a low-fat, high-carb diet. In a pair of 21-day self-experiments conducted in May 2013 and then again in September 2013, Sam decided to consume a 5000+ calorie/day diet to see what would happen to his weight and measurements. Ketogenic diet for cancer educator Miriam Kalamian is our interview guest today in Episode 738 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

 

Cancer is an ugly word in our society and rightfully so. Despite all the best efforts by the most intelligent medical researchers in the world to come up with an effective way to prevent and control this disease, most have fallen woefully short of the mark in helping people who are afflicted with this scary diagnosis. But in recent years we have been hearing about the therapeutic effects of a high-fat, moderate protein, low-carbohydrate ketogenic nutritional approach as a complementary treatment for cancer. People like Dr. Dominic D'AgostinoElaine CantinDr. Thomas SeyfriedDr. Eugene Fine and Dr. Colin Champ are on the front lines of this cutting-edge look at the power of nutrition in dealing with cancer. They are not alone.

Miriam Kalamian is a credentialed nutrition professional who found out the tragic news that her 4-year old son Raffi had a brain tumor the size of an orange in December 2004. After failing to see any improvement in Raffi's condition with all the conventional cancer treatment methods, Miriam stumbled across the ketogenic diet through the work of Boston College cancer researcher Dr. Seyfried and his book Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer. After looking into this diet further, she realized that cancer is indeed a metabolic disease and should be treated as such. When she saw how children with epilepsy are able to implement this diet into their lives therapeutically, Miriam proceeded to put Raffi on the ketogenic nutritional approach designed to produce an adequate amount of ketone bodies to serve as an alternative fuel source without exacerbating the cancer. The results Miriam saw were unbelievable and convinced her there's a lot more to the ketogenic approach than most doctors, oncologists and cancer researchers even realize.

Physics PhD and Spanish Paleo blogger Monica Fernandez is our interview guest today in Episode 735 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

 

We've become a bit spoiled in the Paleo and low-carb communities in recent years as more and more resources have become available for us to learn from and and expand our knowledge about these healthy lifestyle changes. This didn't sit too well with a PhD in Physics named Monica Fernandez who became exposed to the Weston A. Price Foundation, Paleo and low-carb message when she worked in the United States for the past few years. But when Monica returned to her home country of Spain, she has been doing her part to bridge the gap between all the great nutritional health information she learned in English and translating it into Spanish on her "Blog Disidente" blog.

Nutritional wellness expert and low-carb, high-fat cookbook author Maria Emmerich is our interview guest today in Episode 734 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”
