Board-certified neurologist and perennial #1 New York Times bestselling author Dr. David Perlmutter is our guest today in Episode 954 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

The rise of interest in the relationship between gut health and virtually every other aspect of overall health has been quite stark over the past couple of years. And for a Naples, Florida-based board-certified neurologist and perennial #1 New York Times bestselling author Dr. David Perlmutter (listen to our previous interviews with him in Episode 867Episode 725, and on Ask The Low-Carb Experts Episode 51), the impact of the microbiome on the brain is indelibly connected. You probably know him well for his focus on the dangers of consuming grains on your brain health with his recent runaway hit books Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar--Your Brain's Silent Killers and The Grain Brain Cookbook: More Than 150 Life-Changing Gluten-Free Recipes to Transform Your Health. But now he's back with a brand new book in 2015 zeroing in on this banding together of gut-brain health entitled Brain Maker: The Power of Gut Microbes to Heal and Protect Your Brain–for Life.

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Perlmutter have a fascinating discussion of how the gut bacteria plays a critical role in brain health, the scientific relationship between poor gut health and issues like depression, mood disorders, and other cognitive disorders, why inflammation and bowel permeability develop in someone with poor gut health, the damaging effects that women having a C-section are putting on the future health of their babies, the devastating impact of overusing antibiotics on the human microbiome that leads to obesity, the key markers to look for demonstrating gut permeability, how fecal transplants can be helpful in treating infections as well as replenishing gut flora that's been depleted, how reducing carbohydrates and consuming more probiotic foods is critical to reestablishing gut and brain health, why the foods you choose to consume are the biggest factor in revolutionizing brain health through the gut, the kind of fermented foods you should be eating in your low-carb diet, and so much more! If you're just eating low-carb and thinking that's enough to make every aspect of your health optimal, then you'll want to hear what Dr. David Perlmutter has to say about enhancing your low-carb lifestyle to improve your health, especially in the brain, even more!

New York Times science writer, author, and lecturer Harriet Brown is our guest today in Episode 953 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

Ask anyone what it takes to get healthy and very likely their first thought is to lose weight. It seems our culture over the past few decades has begun equating and quantifying health gain almost exclusively through the prism of weight loss. This movement didn't sit too well for a science writer for The New York Times named Harriet Brown who regularly speaks on topics such as body image, food obsession, and eating disorders. In her research into these topics, she identified where these ideas came from that made having extra body fat the last acceptable form of societal discrimination there is and what can be done to change this mindset hellbent on making weight and health interchangeable. She's put all of that into a compelling new 2015 book entitled Body of Truth: How Science, History, and Culture Drive Our Obsession with Weight--and What We Can Do about It.

Listen in as Jimmy and Harriet discuss why "fat" has become a four-letter word in our culture, why there is such an obsession about weight where people become desperate to lose it, the people who benefit the most from keeping us fat and telling us we're unhealthy, the four big lies we've been told about weight and health, the role Big Pharma is playing in creating confusion about this issue, the impact these behind-the-scenes shenanigans are having on virtually everyone everyday, why all the fad diets that are being offered as the answer may not be what people want or need, the damage we are causing our bodies by the constant weight fluctuations up and down, the bright side of shifting away from being weight-focused to health-focused, and a whole lot more. If you or someone you love is struggling with thinking their self-worth is found in that number on the scale, this you won't want to miss what Harriet Brown shares in this compelling and controversial interview today!

Emergency room nurse and Vitamin B12 activist Sally Pacholok is our guest today in Episode 952 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

The state of modern health is in shambles and everyone knows it. While there is so much attention placed on this diet or that diet as a means of fixing this problem, it's a much more complicated issue than simply the food you eat. Embracing real food certainly provides you with the proper nutrients your body needs to function optimally, but there are unintended consequences to health when people don't get certain micronutrients like Vitamin B12 into their body. This has been the passion of nearly three decades of work by a Shelby, Michigan-based ER nurse and paramedic named Sally M. Pacholok, RN (listen to her previous interview sharing about her book Could It Be B12?: An Epidemic of Misdiagnoses on the podcast way back in Episode 411).

WATCH THE TRAILER FOR SALLY PACHOLOK THE MOVIE

https://youtu.be/kuiu5_T4zB4

Sally herself was diagnosed herself with Vitamin B12 deficiency after doctors failed to properly identify her condition. That's what started her on a rebellious mission to share with the whole world about the impact this is having on people. What she began to notice over the years of observing patients was a significant lack of this one micronutrient was leading to some rather profound issues with children beginning in the womb and all the way through adolescence and their brain development. That's why she decided to write a new book in 2015 detailing this unspoken health concern in our kids (and adults too!) entitled What's Wrong with My Child?: From Neurological and Developmental Disabilities to Autism...How to Protect Your Child from B12 Deficiency where she outlines the symptoms to be on the lookout for and offers up solutions for parents on how to best prevent this from happening in their children. In fact, Sally's work with Vitamin B12 deficiency has made such a profound impact on the lives of real people that they released a feature film entitled Sally Pacholok about her life story in 2015 (coming soon to theaters--watch the trailer above!).

Listen in as Jimmy and Sally discuss what has been happening in her work since her last appearance on the podcast in 2010, why she decided to focus primarily on children's health in her new book, why the mainstream medical establishment basically dismisses the Vitamin B12 deficiency connection to disease, the vital importance Vitamin B12 plays on brain development in kids, how Vitamin B12 deficiency may be directly contributing to autism and other issues on the autism spectrum, why an expectant mother needs to have proper Vitamin B12 levels to pass on to her baby, the feature film that was made about her life story, and so much more! We are honored and thrilled to have such an illustrious expert joining us on the show today. Soak this one in and ENJOY!

Every five years, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) convenes a panel of experts on nutrition and health called the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee to determine the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Yoga teacher, chef, blogger, and author Jenni Hulet is our guest today in Episode 950 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

The gateway into finding Paleo for most people is as a direct result of dealing with some form of chronic health problem. For Jenni Hulet from "The Urban Poser" blog, her life was turned upside down in 2010 when she went from being an active mother, yoga teacher, and chef to being unable to get out of bed because of uncontrollable pain and muscle spasms. After months of unproductive doctor visits going through the conventional medicine route, she began to fear that all her creative pursuits were over and that she would have to resign herself to a life of pain management. Eventually, a doctor was able to identify an emerging autoimmune condition that, though devastating, could be fully recovered through changes in her nutrition and lifestyle. Jenni was diagnosed as severely gluten and casein intolerant and was put on a strict diet and supplement regimen to heal her ravaged body.

The process of facing down her worst fears and walking a lengthy path of recovery inspired a new expression for Jenni’s passion: to bring beauty, flavor, and freedom to those struggling with the fear and difficulty of living with health restrictions. It was out of this vision that her blog was born which perfectly marries her culinary skills and love of beautiful, celebratory food with her compassion for the suffering. Jenni was given the opportunity write a book in 2015 about her amazing story and the baking recipes she loves sharing with her readers called My Paleo Patisserie: An Artisan Approach to Grain Free Baking. Listen in as Jimmy and Jenni have a great conversation about her story to Paleo, why she feels Paleo treats are perfectly fine in the right circumstance, how her blog was originally about yoga and veganism, and so much more!

A Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Board Certified Family Practitioner, and Board Certified Medical Bariatrician utilizing low-carb ketogenic diets with patients named Dr. Adam Nally is our guest today in Episode 948 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

Finding a good doctor who understands the key role that nutrition plays in their patient's health can be extremely challenging nowadays. Since most medical professionals are lucky if they've had just a few hours to two weeks worth of education on the role diet plays in health during their medical school training, many don't know how to adequately help their patients dealing with chronic health problems like diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cholesterol and weight management. These topics are all a passionate focus of attention by a Surprise, Arizona-based family medicine practitioner named Dr. Adam Nally from Nally Family Practice. He blogs about how he routinely uses a low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet to help his patients maximize their health where all other forms of traditional medicine has failed. He blogs at DocMuscles.com and is one of the strongest medical proponents of ketogenic diets you'll ever hear.

Dr. Nally was invited by our host Jimmy Moore to be one of the featured speakers on the 2014 Low-Carb Cruise which we shared on this podcast a couple of months back. But the video and audio footage with Dr. Nally became corrupted and unusable. To remedy that, Jimmy invited Dr. Nally to come on the podcast today for a fresh interview that we know you're gonna love. Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Nally have a fascinating chat about the role ketogenic diets play in improving health.

Nutritional consultant, radio personality, public speaker, and author Pam Killeen is our guest today in Episode 947 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

Modern society has grown increasingly more and more messed up in terms of human sexuality in recent decades and the trend line is quite disturbing to nutrition and natural health proponent Pam Killeen (listen to her back in Episode 435). In her three decades of working with clients, Pam has noticed such a huge increase in infertility impotence, erectile dysfunction, PMS, hot flashes, miscarriages, birth defects, and other signs of a disturbance in human survival that she's concerned that the future of mankind may be heading for extinction. It's a controversial subject matter to be sure and she's outlined her reasons for thinking this way in her engaging new book entitled Survival of the Unfittest: How Wisdom Will Save Humans from Falling into Extinction.

Listen in as Jimmy and Pam discuss why we're seeing problems with sexuality today, why libido-enhancing prescription pills aren't the answer to sexual woes, how the proliferation of online pornography has corrupted human relationships, the ramifications of decades of poor nutrition on the second or third generations of children that have followed, the serious concerns of being a vegetarian, the estrogen-mimicking chemicals that are wreaking havoc on sexual health, her own battle with chronic fatigue that she overcame and is now able to help others (especially our youth) beat it as well, and why the subject of sex is so taboo no book publisher would even touch her book. This is an incredibly important topic to discuss even if it is uncomfortable for some. Listen in and find out what we can do to survive this sexual decline.

Ontario, Canada-based nephrologist, weight loss, and diabetes health expert Dr. Jason Fung is our guest today in Episode 945 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”

We have a serious problem with the way we look at and treat people with Type 2 diabetes around the world. This is of great concern to a nephrologist and nutritional health practitioner with a focus on diabetes named Dr. Jason Fung. He's from Intensive Dietary Management in Scarborough, Ontario where patients are put through various protocols to help them control their disease naturally and without the knee-jerk need for medications. Dr. Fung has shared some very enlightening video lectures on YouTube (see below) where he makes the case that you can reverse diabetes through nutritional protocols to get to the root of the insulin resistance that causes it. He's a big believer that it's not about controlling blood sugar, but rather insulin levels. Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Fung go into detail about how diabetes is being treated and what we can do to bring about real change. Don't miss this compelling conversation!
