Botanist/evolutionary biologist researcher and professor Dr. George Diggs, Jr. is our guest today in Episode 706 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”
In the many
interviews we have shared on this podcast, we often lament that
there is very little education provided to the future physicians on
the subject of nutrition as it relates to health. This obvious
problem with healthcare is partly to blame for why obesity and
chronic illness continues to become worse and worse. But thankfully
there are people like today's interview guest Dr.
George Diggs, Jr., a professor in the Department of Biology and
Center for Environmental Studies at Austin College in Sherman,
Texas as well as a Research Associate at the Botanical Research Institute of
Texas.
Jimmy met Dr. Diggs in person at the 2011 Ancestral Health Symposium in Los Angeles and became enamored by this Paleo-minded professor teaching future medical school students about evolutionary nutritional health principles. In fact, he co-wrote a book with his like-minded colleague Dr. Kerry Brock that is being used as a textbook in a classroom setting called The Hunter-Gatherer Within: Health and the Natural Human Diet that is the first-of-its-kind incorporating Paleo health concepts into a mainstream educational setting. Cool!
Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Diggs discuss his interest in the intersection of diet/nutrition, evolution, and health over the past decade, why he decided to write a book about evolutionary health, why the non-profit Botanical Research Institute of Texas published their first-ever diet and health book, how this book is being used in college classrooms to teach about Paleo principles, why the target audience for the book is the "non-science" college students and the general public, the health problems associated with our carbohydrate-laden modern diet, the problem with consuming plants that have defended themselves chemically against predators and so much more! This is a fascinating discussion fans of Paleo, primal and low-carb diets will eat up.
